urbi at orbi».
We are told in the Word there is first Doctrine, then a life according to Doctrine and finally Doctrine according to life. The first Doctrine it is granted the Church, to see as spiritual from a celestial origin on the basis of celestial remains which the Lord awakens for this end.
This must be followed by a life according to Doctrine. It is the life according to Doctrine that has been neglected in the Church. Where the life according to Doctrine is neglected: "The Son of Man (that is the Doctrine) has no place to lay His head". In this connection Mr. Groeneveld, (De Hemelsche Leer Fascicle V, p. 115) shows that by the words of the Lord "How often would I have gathered thy children. Even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings and ye would not, Behold your house Is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, ye shall not see Me henceforth till ye shall say Blessed is lie that cometh in the name of the Lord," That by these words is signified, that Doctrine has been given to the Church which is spiritual from a celestial origin, and that the Lord's love goes forth to the Church in such a state, But there is no retreat or repentance in relation to the things of life, and thus no affection of being taken up into the body of the Church. Wherefore man must acknowledge that evil remains in the will, and that it is an irrefutable truth that nothing more of the things of the Divine Human of the Lord will come into light in the thinking of the Church and the man of the Church until the Church and the man of the Church shall be willing to leave his own human things and from the heart acknowledge no other human things but those which flow forth from the truths, of the Word and the Doctrine of the Church.
Until there is a life according to Doctrine, or what is the same until the human things of man's life also become the Lord's, it is vain to speak about the "good from which doctrine originates", or to speak about doctrine according to life, or of truth from good or the inversion that takes place then. For such talks are than only Intellectual gymnastics.
Mr. Sigstedt then says "if we dwell in this wintry light of Doctrine - wonderful as it may be - without the burning desire to do - and I mean to do."
Who has been dwelling in the wintry light of Doctrine? For a year my sermons and classes have all been directed towards a life according to Doctrine and to the necessity of removals of evils and falsities which make such a life impossible. "To do" we read in the Arcana Coelestia (316) means "to will well".
To will well is to have the will regenerated from the Lord, and doing which is not from the regenerated will is not essential good but evil no matter how good it may appear. To be in a hurry to do, without being concerned about the regeneration of the will, which is long and difficult, comes from the proprium.
Mr. Sigstedt continues, "Without Charity this Church will go backwards, disintegrate and vanish away, because without Charity it is far worse than any other Church," This statement is indeed most true, but what is Charity?
Charity is defined in the Word as "Doing the use of one’s employment justly, sincerely and faithfully". Now one can do what is just, sincere, and faithful, according to the light of the world, which is relatively easy, or one can do one's use justly, sincerely and faithfully, in the light of the Word and heaven, which involves a life long struggle, or a struggle of life and death, - the choosing of the straight and narrow way. But it is just here that the man is apt to rebel. This is far too difficult, a man wants a much easier charity and so he chooses the broad way, which he calls charity, but which internally is nothing but vanity, Internal Charity is a doing well to the neighbor in spiritual things, but what the natural man considers WELL lacks all wisdom and therefore such a one is more apt to do harm than good. To come into the wisdom of life in which one knows what is doing well also involves a bitter life long struggle, which appears far too difficult, wherefore, again the man chooses the apparently obvious and therefore the easy aid wrong way.
I called on Mr. Sigstedt and asked him what he understood by Charity, He also asked me what I understood by it, I replied that I believed that Charity was a life according to Doctrine and referred to an article by Mr. Groeneveld I had read two days previously in Doctrinal Class, as an illustration of a Doctrine of
Life. Mr. Sigstedt stated that that article was drivel. I asked Mr. Sigstedt what he considered Charity to be. He replied leaving others in freedom. To which in reply I pointed out that what man in an unregenerate state calls freedom is license, and that real freedom appears to such a one as slavery.
Mr. Sigetedt then said, "The trouble is that you do not believe in MY reception of Divine things from the Lord." I drew his attention to the fact that he had put the emphasis on the MY, which he acknowledged, and said he meant on the reception of the Divine things from the Lord by different members of the Church, Mr. Philip Odhner at another time also made a similar statement to me.
These statements about recognizing the inspiration of others are typical of the disordered thinking and expression, that is most characteristic of the World today. Although in the Church this thing is a thousand times more serious and is indeed the center of where our present difficulties lie.
In the world the minster, the philosopher, the artist , all demand that their inspiration be recognized, that each one has a right to live and let live. A judgment which distinguishes between things which are false and things which are genuine is condemned. Thug all genuine examination including self examination is banished, and the horrible commingling of good, bad and indifferent is accepted as tolerance and broad mindedness and thus as the normal thing. When the good, bad and indifferent are called Divine and are said to be the Lord's, then a most grievous profanation takes place.
No one while in a genuine state could possibly speak of my reception of Divine things from the Lord, for nothing can be of the Divine of the Lord with man except in the state of greatest humility. A man must stand with the utmost fear and awe at the thought that the least thing of the Divine of the Lord might be with him. In fact a man could only be in such a thought genuinely in a state of such holy fear that he would be struck dumb.
On asking further what he understood by spiritual Charity, Mr. Sigstedt’s
wife gave the following illustration of spiritual Charity. She said Mr. Sigstedt had made a sculpture bas-relief which contained significatives, which together with a written explanation of the significatives, was displayed and that thousands of people including the President of the United States had come to see the sculpture and had read the explanation, thus gaining spiritual ideas. I pointed that to merely add ideas to a mind not in the truth, without pointing to the contrast between what was true and false was of no spiritual use for the ideas were only commingled with falsities in such a case. Wherefore in the Word throughout, and in all genuine Doctrine the contrast between the new truth and the falsity, and between good and evil is everywhere present. In fact this idea of Mrs. Sigstedt's was nothing but the Convention idea of Charity, or the old pernicious idea of permeation. Also the idea of freedom and of accepting whatever anyone claimed to be of inspiration was typical of Convention as well as of the world, let Mr. Philip Odhner said that "the forms of evil that existed in past states of the Church are not the real danger now",
Mr. Sigstedt complains that "we have have been, in states of exaltation but in a state of humiliation and defeat which has ended in a state of disgust which does not have any Charity and doesn't care".
In a recent speech, in relation to the war, it was said we must enter the storm and pass through it; that is we must face it, The children of Israel who represented the spiritual Church had to spend forty years in the wilderness where it was barren, and where at times they lacked foot and water, to enter the land of Canaan, and where they murmured against the Lord acid against Moses and Aaron, even threatening to stone them, and demanded to return into Egypt.
Note that Moses signifies the Divine Law, Aaron the Doctrine thence, Concerning stoning we read as follows: "And a man shall smite his companion with a stone, or with fish. That this signifies the invalidating of someone truth by reason of some scientific or general truth. By scientifics are meant truths which are from the literal sense of the Word, General truths are such as are received among people generally, and consequently are in general discourse. There are very many such truths, and they prevail with much force. In many cases the Doctrines of the Church depart from the literal sense of the Word," A.C. 9025
It often happens that a man of the Church does not perceive the love and wisdom in the Divine Law and in Doctrine; he therefore feels himself dying of hunger and thirst, that is for the lack of love and charity, and truths in the Church for which lack he blames the Law and Doctrine. He therefore becomes angry at the Law and Doctrine, not only murmuring against it, but taking up general truths from the letter of the Word in the Church with which to slay the Law and the Doctrine,
The whole of the Old Testament, which in the spiritual sense, represents the glorification of the Lord and the Regeneration of Man, is a description of wars and distresses intermingled with short periods of peace and prosperity. The Lord's life is said to have been one of continual combats and continual victories, and the life of the man who is regenerated is an image of this.
But this seems too difficult for most; they wish for "exaltation" before its time and therefore find exaltation in the thought of the return to the flesh pots of Egypt, that is to the old apparent things of Charity and its delight. Thus they murmur against loses for bringing them into the wilderness, saying: "Were there not graves in Egypt that he had brought them into the wilderness to die".
Mr. and Mrs. Sigstedt have not been willing to turn their back on the old states of the New Church, even suggesting that we should unite in the things of Charity with Convention and the General Church. They stand looking new forward and now backwards, yet it is impossible to see the Glory, the genuine "exaltation" unless one remains constantly faced forward seeing the glory as something to be arrived at by a long endured combat, and hard won victory,
Mr. Sigstedt continues, "It is a dangerous thing to despise others in comparison with one's self or one's own doctrinal belief, because it may well be the Lord in others who gets this despisal." To despise others in comparison with oneself is a grievous sin. However one must do everything possible to preserve the purity of the doctrine and life of the Church; if this appears like the despisal of others, it cannot be helped.
